Beverley McInnis

As a multi-media fibre artist and Bag and Purse maker, Beverley McInnes lives in Chester, is a juried Master Artisan of Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council; a Juried Member of The Society of Layerists in Multi Media and also a juried member of Fiber Forum, a study and exhibiting group. She belongs to Nova Scotia Printmakers Association in addition to many national and international organizations; teaches widely and exhibits frequently. As coordinator of The Fort Anne Tapestry Project in Annapolis Royal in SW Nova Scotia, she was appointed in 1990, by Parks Canada to oversee this Textile approx 150square feet), and the remarkable 400 year history of our province. It is said that everything creatively has already been done. Experimentation with traditional methods, however, allows for new dimensions. This fascinates me ! I look closely at new techniques and push boundaries. As my multi-media and fiber work, in addition to being a Purse and Bag maker, has evolved, I have found an escape, in my recent pieces, exploring collage, Image Transfer and print making. Working with transferred imagery and altered papers has seized my imagination and results in new spatial depth while creating a sense of poignancy, mystery and alchemy. Maintaining the use of needle and thread also fills the traditional gap while mark making provides infinite design possibilities for me and a reference point for my ideas. This continues to challenge and excite. I find stimulation in my work as I use many techniques including disperse dyeing, Polaroid Transfers, foiling, in addition to employing found objects, metal mesh and many threads and beads in creating and achieving the 'desired look' in my Bags, Purses and Neckpieces. Beverley’s unique commissioned Purses employ multimedia techniques that continue to intrigue.
