Carol Smeraldo

Recently my work in porcelain has been an expression of a search for understanding the creative cycle natural to all of us. Deep within the unknown territory of the inner landscape lies the possibility of inspiration and a mysterious connection that may open the way to the unexpected. Myths, metaphors, and motifs play key roles. Harmony within contrast is important. With a rich variety of hand building and throwing techniques I create gallery quality art works from very small to unusually large porcelain, functional to sculptural works inspired by nature especially the ocean, music, painting and by the thrilling affects possible in Japanese/North American style RAKU firing. I use porcelain and translucent porcelain and occasionally stoneware. I express my impressions primarily with “One Off” porcelain sculptures, vessels, murals, containers, wall pieces and Art in Motion mobiles. I love that which takes my breath away through expressive contrasts in harmony sublime subtlety in form, texture, color, movement, and classic forms. It is enlivening to continue to push the materials and to learn through workshops and working with other artists. With 37 years experience and international recognition, I teach pottery classes at Atlantic Pottery Supplies in Dartmouth and work in my lakeside, woodland One Off Studio in Nova Scotia, Canada.
