Catherine Beck

A graduate of the Vancouver Community College (Jewellery & Gemology Degree), Catherine Beck went on to study at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (Jewellery & Hollow-ware). She is a highly regarded Nova Scotia jeweller, having worked in this field for 15 years and is a member of the Metal Arts Guild of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Designers Craft Council from whom she won the award “Best Body of Work” in 1998. Says Catherine about her work: Manipulating metal is a constant source of fascination for me. Its malleable nature lends infinite possibilities in both shape and design. Fine metals are intriguing because of their many qualities. The metal I work with may have been mined years ago and worn by many people over the centuries; it may have been melted and changed its form many times. Jewellery uses the body as a gallery and its inherent magic and charm changes the attitude of the wearer. In designing and creating jewellery, I focus on the body as a landscape. Jewellery then becomes a means to either contrast or accentuate the line and quality of the human form.
