Catherine Linfield

Her horse sculptures have been called "impressive" and "powerfully expressive". Horses have fascinated Cathy Linfield since childhood. A talented artist in various media, Cathy studied at Mount Allison University receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours in 1993. Her sculptures, paintings, and installations have been exhibited widely in New Brunswick since graduation. Many of the works earlier in her career have dealt with social issues involving women and children. Since 1999, Catherine has been focusing her talents on portraying the elegance in motion of horses. She clearly understands and appreciates horses which allows her to capture their power, beauty and imparts into her sculptures a life-like quality. This is further enhanced with her exquisite attention to detail of even the most fleeting gestures of movement, like the flaring of the nostrils or the curling of their lips. Says Catherine about her work: "I live with 3 horses and have observed all the emotions humans can express in these three. Horses have fascinated me since childhood and still will after my death. ..The sculptures are made of porcelain a notorious media to work with. Some are left as pure white porcelain with a clear glaze on top. Some have a crackle glaze applied and then are 'kiln shocked' during the cooling process to aid in the cracking process. ( this is a matter of allowing cold air into the kiln several times after it has reached optimum temperature). I can then apply various colors to the crackle glaze where normally you only get black. Some are rakued...either total body or chosen areas. I reduce in dried horse manure for a hot burn. Occasionally this manure has uric acid in it which, I find, enhances the color a bit. " Each horse is hand built...totally unique.
