Cheryl Wilcox

Cheryl Wilcox has been exhibiting her paintings throughout New England for over 25 years. She works on location using a mobile studio, without the aid of photography. Cheryl's signature brushwork produces work with a bold and energetic style. She has studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts and received her M.F.A. from the Massachusetts College of Art. Cheryl has shown her work in numerous galleries in Boston and Nova Scotia. Says Cheryl: Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, I have returned to my native homeland after many years of studying art in Boston and Rhode Island. The idea was to quietly retire by the sea, but once here, the landscape so inspired me, and the visions were so spectacular and exciting, that I could not be still. Seascapes and scrublands are a theme in many of my paintings. Nature is a subject I am comfortable with and interested in: from florals, to pine and rock, or ocean sunsets. The spiritual aspect of the environmental experience becomes enjoyable for me by empathizing with the place and coming to understand it. Working outdoors is always inspiring and physically challenging in the different seasons. There is a sense of adventure in exploring the back roads and coastlines of Nova Scotia. The choices I make are usually visual and temporal ones - occurring at the moment of visual acuity. The search for a great painting is endless as are the opportunities and difficulties. The spontaneity developed outdoors strengthens the unity and energy of the work, and dramatic light provides nature with awe and mystery which leads to a greater respect for the landscape and its creator. I enjoy the places I discover and the images derived; each is a surprise as I never know what the blank canvas will become.
