Emily Seaboyer

BFA 2005, Nova Scotia College of Art & Design University. A long time “maker of things” (be it fine jewellery or tea biscuits), Emily’s earliest memories include working with her hands- though not until studying at NSCAD University did she explore a wide variety of materials and media for creating artwork. It wasn’t until working in metal, that she found a compelling medium in which to develop new concepts. Emily is most often inspired by organic materials and processes that allow for unique textures. Tactile surfaces are integral to many of her designs, and often reflect elements of a natural environment. However, it is the concept of modern heirloom that she finds most intriguing. When reflecting on her work, says Emily: “I’ve often thought that to see the world that surrounds us, simply cannot compare to the way it feels. The way it tastes. The way it smells. Jewellery design and production, lends itself abundantly to our sense of touch, and while there are some limitations concerning taste and smell, it is not enough for a piece to be only aesthetically pleasing. A particular piece might act as a souvenir to an experience, or it may simply, ultimately, bare-witness to experiences.” Following her graduation from NSCAD U in 2005, Emily has spent much of her time developing Locusart Jewellery Designs, the focus of which is to produce original one-of-a-kind, production and limited production work. Emily teaches workshops in studio as well as in association with Ross Creek Center for the Arts- and continues to develop concepts for future exhibitions of work. In response to the ongoing processes involved in design and fabrication, Emily states: “...things are always changing. I understand that this work takes an incredible amount of time, and I look forward to new challenges. I am interested in a variety of materials and concepts, and I can’t wait to explore them further.” Collections: Introspective [2010] Into the Fire [2009] Ash Pod [2008] Dandelion Medallion [2008] Heart Above Water [2007] Silver Shell Collection [2006] Central Kings Rural High School Mascot Alumni Pin [2000]
