Marilyn Rand

Marilyn Rand is a farmer, artist and teacher living in the beautiful Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia. Following a thirty year career in textile production, Marilyn has gone back to the grass roots of the industry. Marilyn and her husband raise a flock of wool breed sheep on their farm. Marilyn spins novelty yarns, felts, knits and creates textile pictures from fibre. Quote: “I am often inspired by the natural beauty and particular texture of a fibre to choose the way I will use it in my art.” Marilyn teaches spinning, dyeing, felting and knitting courses on a regular basis, sharing her enthusiasm for the versatility of her medium. “Being an artist means being able to translate the vision in your mind through the creative process to your product. Not everything I envision turns out exactly as I wish, but I have had some wonderful surprises and some real disasters. As I mature in my art I am having fewer failures. I have never taught a course where I didn’t learn as well. These are the rewards of teaching.” Inspired by nature, revisiting childhood through the eyes of her eight grandchildren, and struggling with the realities of two o’clock am lamb births, all contribute to the life and art of this artist, who wouldn’t trade places with anyone else on planet earth.
