William Rogers

William Rogers is a Nova Scotia artist who works primarily in watercolour, painting landscapes, seascapes, figures and horses. The effects of light and colour dominate his award-winning watercolours which have been exhibited widely in Canada and the USA . Rogers works mostly in plein air. Says Rogers , “I have enjoyed the struggle of working with this difficult medium for over 25 years. Countless hours of fieldwork have helped to make the technique somewhat automatic for me but each subject presents its own unique problems, problems which I enjoy solving. Working from a live model and on site has taken an increasing amount of my painting time, but I find that the discipline that this has necessitated, has helped all aspects of my art making. As I work I’m usually drawn to something that I glimpse out of the corner of my eye. Reacting to nature and recording the spirit of what I see makes my painting more like poetry than prose, because I selectively omit everything that doesn’t add to the design. I truly enjoy making art, consider myself a student for life and always strive to make my next painting my best.” A former art teacher, Rogers is a signature member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. He conducts painting workshops for universities, groups and associations. William Roger’s work is in many private and permanent collections including the Nova Scotia Art Bank, Saint Francis Xavier University and the CSPWC Diploma Collection.
