Teresa
Bergen is very much an artist of her time. The ability that she has
to create
three-dimensional ceramic pieces that are not only very well crafted
but that
also epitomize her amazing imaginative spirit is really quite
remarkable. Her
work is characterized by the way that she decorates all of the surfaces
of a
piece. One might think one has captured the message of a piece until
one turns
it over and there is another interesting twitter. She uses as subjects
her own
life and embellishes it with her imagination
In
this
exhibit, transformation images and narratives inspired by Greek
mythology are the basis for a series of sculptures, wall pieces and
pots.
She has continued to explore mechanical movement in some pieces to
depict the
moment of transformation in her ceramic work.
Teresa shares this
information about her show:
“Right
now I'm working on a piece based on the story of Leda and the Swan. The
god
Zeus is rebuffed in his efforts to seduce happily married Leda in his
human
form, so he takes on the guise of a swan to get close to her. The ploy
is a
success! I have a sculpture of the two embracing while swimming
around in
a pond with a babbling brook/fountain.
In
another piece a crank turns a pictorial wheel that tells the story of
Persephone. Her marriage to Hades breaks her mother's heart and results
in the
changing seasons. (All of this more or less clearly explained in
pictures!)
...Daphne
is a nature loving nymph who has no interest in marriage. When
she is
hotly pursued by an amorous Apollo she prays to the river god to save
her from
his unwanted attentions. That prayer is answered when she is
immediately
transformed into a tree.
...There
is a vase telling the story of Narcissus who falls in love with his own
beauty
and unable to part with his own reflection, eventually dies and grows
back as a
flower.”
