Johanna Steffen

Johanna Steffen received her academic and fine art training at the University of King’s College, Halifax (BA in Classics and German) and at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (Bachelor of Design in Communication Design and Bachelor of Fine Art). This very comprehensive training is evident in the careful and thoughtful way in which she approaches art making.

Says Johanna about her art:

Most of my paintings are of the La Have islands, a group of islands off the south shore of Nova Scotia. In these paintings, I try to reduce the landscape to its basic forms, using minimal brushstrokes. Sometimes the foreground becomes almost abstract. I use colour to create depth, and to capture the character of the landscape, for example, using muted colours to suggest fog or overcast skies.
