Marlene
Guenther
Marlene Guenther graduated from NSCAD University (Nova Scotia
College of Art & Design) in April 2006 with a BFA in Textiles
and a minor in Art History. She received several awards and
scholarships for her textile works while studying at Capilano
College in North Vancouver, BC and at NSCAD. Notably, Marlene was
the inaugural recipient of the Heather Stone Emerging Artist Award given by the Atlantic
Crafts Trade Commission in 2006.
Prior to pursuing a degree in Textiles, Marlene worked as a Medical
Laboratory Technician in the US for ten years. She brings her
analytical background into her studio practice and believes that
experimentation and research are essential to understanding the
potential of any medium. Marlene strongly feels that a thorough
understanding of ones medium is vital in the creation of an
effective product design.
Marlene produces superior hand-crafted sculptural lighting
and textiles for domestic and commercial spaces which are friendly
to the environment. Renewable materials such as wool, linen, silk
and cotton are sourced from family run farms across Canada and FSC
approved suppliers are used for the hardwood bases of her
products. Marlene divides her time between motherhood, teaching
textile techniques at NSCAD Continuing Studies, teaching assistant
for the faculty of Historical & Critical Studies at NSCAD, and
her studio practice.
