| Mary Jane Lundy
Mary Jane Lundy grew up in the small town of St. George in New
Brunswick. As a young girl she spent many summers playing on the Bay
of Fundy shores. Some of her early work experience consisted of jobs
in the local tuna factory and the sardine factory where she grew up.
After high school she worked at the Biological Station in St.
Andrews, New Brunswick. The associations with the sea and its
surroundings have greatly influenced her work.
Mary Jane creates ceramic fish wall hangings, sculptured fish
houses stuffed with fish, and more recently bird sculptures. She
uses white and red grogged earthenware low fire clays and coloured
slips as well as colourful glazes. Her subjects are limited to the
sea life found in the Nova Scotia waters of the Atlantic Ocean and
its shorelines. Other forms inspired by the sea, such as tide pools,
grottos and whirlpools are incorporated into her work.
The ceramic sculptures of fish houses are stuffed full of cod and
other species of fish such as haddock, sole, and red perch using a
plaster cast made from the actual fish caught by local fisherman. a
time…” theme when fish were abundant. Titles such as “Fred’s
Sole Shack”, “Mildred’s Cod House,” create a nostalgic
awareness of the “once upon a a time…” theme when fish were
abundant.
Mary Jane Lundy is a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art
and Design and has a BFA major in Ceramics. |
